Outreach
Background
Since its creation, Team 1726 has held strongly to the FIRST credo of inspiring and participating actively in the community. Over the years, the N.E.R.D.S. have volunteered at several community events, started and mentored technology oriented programs for minors, and represented not only the team, but the community in international competition. It is our goal to inspire the youth of our community to pursue interests in the ever-growing field of science and technology. We are sure that, in the future, the impact of Team 1726 will be great, and that its benefits will be spread throughout the county, state, and country!
Programs
Summer Vex Robotics Camps
Every year, Team 1726 hosts a two-session Summer Vex Camp, where elementary and middle school students are able to gain hands-on experience in constructing robotic systems. Our club utilitzes the Vex Robotics Design System, a product line of robotic construction sets which allow individuals of any age to use their imaginations and create unique machines. The children who participate in our program learn important teamwork skills, and are encouraged to practice good sportsmanship and safety practices. Feedback has been greatly positive, as these children learn and utilize valuable life skills in order to ensure success in their futures.
However, another important aspect of these summer camps is the amount of fun each student has participating. Our camps provide a thrilling competition where students form teams in order to achieve a certain goal. The students have a great time working together and working with high school student-mentors, who also teach these youths role model characteristics so that they may serve to inspire even younger generations of students.
Overall, the Vex Summer Robotics Camps provide a fulfilling experience to all participants. Not only are they great fun for students, but they also teach teamwork and leadership skills necessary for becoming an active member of the community.
FIRST Lego League Mentorship
Since the 2006-2007 season, Team 1726 has been dedicated to spreading the FIRST program to other schools and community members. Over the last 2 years, the team has mentored 8 FIRST Lego League teams within the city of Sierra Vista. The N.E.R.D.S. have gladly mentored each of these teams, giving younger participants the ability to cooperate and work with mentors in the real world. In the future, we hope to expand the program to other schools throughout the county and continue to mentor the younger students who participate in this program.
Community Events and Volunteering
Art in the Park
Every year, the city of Sierra Vista is host to Art in the Park, a large weekend gathering of artists, vendors, and enthusiasts from around the state. The N.E.R.D.S. play an active role in the success of this event. Team members willing spend their own time (free of charge) assembling and dismantling vendor booths, as well as offering any assistance possible to make the vendors' stays as enjoyable as possible. In return, the park offers the team a booth in exchange for its services. This partnership has been a helpful one, as team members pursue volunteer activities while also promoting the N.E.R.D.S. and the community.
Cars in the Park
Like Art in the Park, Team 1726 plays an active role in volunteering at this event. Cars in the Park is a gathering of car enthusiasts, where hundreds of automobiles are showcased to the community. The team offers its services to venue personel at no charge, volunteering its time solely for the benefit of the community. Members have found this to be a fulfilling experience, as the team and its members make a good name for itself. We know that in the future, our team will always be willing to help makes its community a better place.
