FIRST Robotics Competition
The FIRST Robotics Competition is a high-school level competition whose main goal is to inspire students to pursue careers in science and engineering by providing an exciting, competitive challenge. At the beginning of January every year, FIRST announces a new challenge. Teams then have six weeks to design, construct, and test a machine to complete the task. At the end of the six weeks, the teams must ship their creation to their regional competition site, where it will await the competition in March.
Every weekend for six weeks, starting on February 28, 2008, over 1500 teams from around the world will compete at regional events. Like any other sporting event, the competitions provide a thrilling experience to students and spectators alike. The spirit of the competition, however, encourages sportsmanship among both teammates and opponents on the field. Multi-robot alliances must strategize and cooperate in order to succeed, simulating real life experiences in a competive setting. The experience teaches more than just how to build a robot; it teaches real-world lessons that students can keep for the rest of their lives.
