FIRST Lego League
The FIRST Lego League is a competition aimed at junior high school students. The main goal of this competition is to inspire young students to pursue interests in science, technology, and engineering. Thousands of teams assemble from all around the world to competitively create an autonomous machine using the Lego Mindstorms NXT SystemTM. The competition game changes yearly, with each theme often involving advances in science and technology. Teams create presentations for judges, showing their understanding of research and scientific concepts which are the foundations of our ever-growing technological society.
Throughout the build and competition, students develop valuable teamwork skills which are essential to future success. Working together not only helps accomplish tasks, but it builds strong relationships with teammates. It is this type of relationship which permiates through all FIRST programs. Team members also learn about Gracious Professionalism, an ideal which encourages sportsmanship towards all teams, whether they be your teammate or opponent. Even during the competition, students learn to demonstrate maturity and compassion towards other students. It is plain to see that the FIRST Lego League is not just a competition of the minds; it is the beginning of an experience which will forever improve the lives of its participants.
